Remarks of Ambassador Ricciardone (May 29, 2002): Today the United States Department of State is launching an initiative under the Rewards for Justice program that will offer ordinary people in the Philippines and around the world an opportunity to contribute to the battle against terrorism. We are taking this step in support of, and following, a similar program of the Government of the Republic of the Philippines.

As democracies, the Philippine and the American governments derive their power from the people. We believe that ordinary citizens of the Philippines or elsewhere may have information that can help bring the Abu Sayyaf terrorist to justice.

To encourage citizens to come forth and provide such information, the United States Government is offering to pay up to 5 million dollars for information leading to the arrest or conviction of the Abu Sayyaf terrorists pictured above.

Working together, we can defeat the terrorism that has already cost both of our nations so many innocent lives.
